Priya Suriyasena (1944–2024) was a celebrated Sri Lankan singer and composer. He earned a diploma in music from Heywood (1968–1971) and won the UNESCO talent competition. Starting as a music teacher at Kelaniya Gurukula College, he later taught at Kalubowila Vidyalaya and Dehiwala Central College before prioritizing music. In 1972, he became an A-grade radio singer, recording his early songs at SLBC and releasing Sri Lanka's second-ever cassette under the Tharanga label. Inspired by motor racing legend Priya Munasinghe, he shortened his name from Priyadharshi to Priya. Collaborating with icons like Clarence Wijewardena and Premakeerthi de Alwis, he created timeless hits and composed for notable artists such as H.R. Jothipala and Milton Mallawarachchi. Suriyasena ventured into film as a playback singer, winning a Sarasaviya Award for his duet in Ethin Ethata (1984). Transitioning to cassette production in the 1990s, he revolutionized Sri Lankan music with Sunflowers with Priya, grossing over Rs. 8 million. He performed in over 44 countries and remained a significant influence in Sri Lankan music, leaving a lasting legacy.
